A smash buy is a one-time, instant crypto purchase on ZenDCA. Unlike repeat buy schedules that run automatically on a set interval, a smash buy lets you buy crypto on the spot whenever you want. It's perfect for when you see a dip, want to top up your position, or just want to make a quick purchase without setting up a recurring schedule.
How to place a smash buy
To get started, head to the Smash Buys tab on your dashboard. You'll need to have at least one exchange connected with trading permissions. If you haven't connected an exchange yet, check out our guide on connecting your exchange account.
Here's how to place a smash buy:
- Select an exchange — Choose from Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken or Binance.US. You'll see a checkmark next to any exchange you've already connected.
- Enter a purchase amount — Type in the amount you want to spend. You can also use the quick amount buttons (100, 250, 500, 1000 or 2000) to fill it in faster.
- Choose a cryptocurrency — Search by name or ticker symbol. The available cryptos depend on the exchange you selected and your plan.
- Click Buy Now — Your order will be placed immediately on the exchange.
Once submitted, ZenDCA places a limit order on the exchange for the best available price. On Binance.US, a market order is used instead. Your exchange balance for the selected fiat currency will be shown below the form, so you can confirm you have enough funds before buying.
Tracking your smash buys
After placing a smash buy, it will appear in the Recent Smash Buys table below the form. You can see the date, exchange, crypto, amount, purchase price, gain/loss and current status for each buy. Click Details to view the full breakdown, including fees paid, fee savings and ROI.
Smash buys can have one of three statuses:
- Completed — The order was filled successfully.
- Pending — The order has been placed but not yet filled. This is usually very brief.
- Failed — Something went wrong (e.g. insufficient funds, exchange error). You can view the error message in the details and delete failed buys to keep things tidy.
Use the refresh button to update the status of pending orders and recalculate your ROI across all smash buys.
Fee savings
Just like repeat buy schedules, smash buys save you money on fees by using limit orders instead of the higher-fee mobile app pricing. The estimated fee savings are shown in green below the form as you enter your purchase amount. You'll also see the actual savings in the details of each completed smash buy.
Plan limits
The number of smash buys you can place depends on your plan:
- Free plan — Up to 5 smash buys
- Minimalist plan — Up to 50 smash buys
- Buddha plan — Unlimited smash buys
Only completed and pending smash buys count towards your limit. Failed buys do not. If you hit your limit, you can upgrade your plan to place more.
Good to know
- You need a fiat balance on the exchange to place a smash buy. ZenDCA cannot use your bank account or debit card directly.
- The minimum purchase amount varies by exchange and cryptocurrency. We calculate it dynamically based on the exchange's requirements.
- Free plan users can only purchase Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Zcash. Upgrade to a paid plan to unlock all supported cryptos.
- Smash buys are completely separate from repeat buy schedules. Creating a smash buy does not affect your schedule limits.
